Session Overview

Karch Kiraly explains why modern serve-receive training has moved away from forcing passers to get their feet behind every ball to pass from the midline. Against tough, fast float and jump serves, Kiraly demonstrates why holding a balanced athletic base and angling the forearm platform outside the body is far more effective and realistic.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • At competitive speeds, servers hit too hard and with too much late movement for passers to get their midline behind every ball.
  • Train passers to establish a stable, quiet base early and reach their platform outside their body (left or right) by dropping the inside shoulder.
  • Chasing midline on late-moving serves causes hop-stepping at contact, whereas early platform angle control outside the hip produces consistent 3-point passes.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Angle outside the body""Drop the inside shoulder""Quiet feet on contact"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Debunks the outdated 'always get your feet behind the ball' passing myth with evidence from the international game.
