GAME-LIKE Practice 104: 6v6 Threshold | DRILLS to Optimize Player Development with Karch Kiraly

Karch Kiraly • USA Volleyball
USA Men & Women Olympic Gold Head Coach

Session Overview

In part four of USA Volleyball's Game-Like Practice series, Karch Kiraly demonstrates the '6v6 Threshold' drill structure. In a Threshold game, a team must first execute a specific tactical or technical standard—such as serving into a designated seam between passers—before they are eligible to score a point in the rally.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • In a 6v6 Threshold game, rallies are played out normally, but a point only counts on the scoreboard if the team first hits a clearly defined skill threshold.
  • Threshold scoring works especially well for measurable tactical targets like serving into a specific seam, hitting a set tempo, or keeping first-ball passes inside a target zone.
  • Allowing players to help choose the threshold objective increases athlete ownership and tactical communication between rallies.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Hit the threshold to unlock the point""Serve the seam with pace""Train 6v6 transfer"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Gives coaches a proven USA National Team 6v6 scoring system to hold athletes accountable to tactical execution under game-like pressure.
