How to Create a PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Plan | Guiding Athlete Growth with Karch Kiraly

Karch Kiraly β€’ USA Volleyball
USA Men & Women Olympic Gold Head Coach

Session Overview

In this 43-minute coaching seminar for USA Volleyball, Karch Kiraly walks coaches through his complete system for creating individualized Personal Development Plans (PDPs) with athletes. Drawing on lessons from mentor Marv Dunphy, Kiraly explains the Five Pillars of Development (Craft, Body, Mind, Heart, Team) and why asking curious questions empowers athlete ownership far better than top-down prescriptions.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Make the athlete the primary agent of their Personal Development Plan (PDP) by asking curious, open-ended questions rather than dictating what they need to fix.
  • Structure athlete reflection across five holistic pillars: Craft (volleyball skills/IQ), Body (physical readiness), Mind (focus/resilience), Heart (passion/courage), and Team (connection).
  • Limit each athlete's active PDP focus to 1–2 concrete, observable behaviors during practice so feedback remains clear and actionable.
