Volleyball OUT OF SYSTEM ATTACKING | Strategic Tools to Optimize Your Game Play with Karch Kiraly

K
Karch Kiraly • USA Volleyball
USA Men & Women Olympic Gold Head Coach

Session Overview

U.S. National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly teaches a complete tactical framework for upgrading out-of-system (OOS) attacking using USA Volleyball training drills and Olympic match footage. Kiraly focuses on three pillars: setting the ball closer to the net and inside the antenna, expanding the hitter's toolkit (wipes, recycles, high hands, and daylight seams), and enforcing 'Great Zero' coverage standards.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Train non-setters to set out-of-system balls closer to the net (3–5 feet off) and inside the court rather than safe, far-off sets that trap hitters against a settled double block.
  • Build a versatile hitter 'Toolkit' against set blocks: swing high off outside hands, chip line, wipe the seam, or purposefully recycle ('Great Zero') off the block to reset the offense.
  • Pair every out-of-system swing with relentless 'Great Zero then Kill' (GZK) coverage so recycled balls immediately convert into in-system transition kills.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Set close and inside""Find daylight or recycle""Great Zero then Kill (GZK)"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

An extraordinary 19-minute tactical clinic by Karch Kiraly showing how Olympic teams turn broken plays into points through OOS setting, recycling, and coverage.
