AVCA Video Tip of the Week: Handling the Deep Ball

A
Alix Klineman • AVCA Volleyball
Olympic Gold Medalist, 4x Stanford All-American & USA National Team Outside Hitter

Session Overview

Olympic Gold Medalist and 4-time Stanford All-American Alix Klineman demonstrates how the USA National Team uses a drop step and a rolling-chair drill to train upper-body platform angles on fast, deep float serves.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • On fast deep serves where you cannot get behind the ball in your midline, take a quick drop step to open your hips and pass with a high lateral platform.
  • Using a drop step allows front-row outside hitters to pass deep serves without retreating behind the endline, keeping them in position to transition and attack.
  • Practice passing deep tosses while seated on a rolling chair to isolate upper-body posture, bent knees, and inside-shoulder tilt.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Drop step and open your hips on fast deep serves""Keep your platform high and angled to target""Pass deep without losing your hitting transition"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Features a unique USA National Team rolling-chair progression that isolates upper-body shoulder tilt and high-platform control on deep serves.
