Session Overview
In Part 5 of the Elevate Yourself passing series, Coach Donny breaks down the three essential types of passing footwork: shuffle steps for short lateral movement, crossover-and-run steps for long distance, and drop-step footwork for deep serves. He pairs each pattern with live game examples and practice drills.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Use quick shuffle steps without crossing the feet for serves within two steps of your starting position.
- Turn the hips and use a crossover step when chasing balls far to the sideline or deep into the court.
- Open the hips with a drop step on deep float serves rather than backpedaling on your heels.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Shuffle short, crossover far""Drop-step on deep serves""Plant balanced on contact"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Clearly teaches when passers should shuffle versus crossover or drop-step so athletes stop reaching lazily for balls.
