Session Overview

In Part 4 of his passing series, Coach Donny teaches the technique and rules for overhead hand passing in serve receive. He explains how hand passing differs from setting—requiring firmer wrists and a quicker, stiffer contact—to handle high float serves without getting called for a double contact.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Unlike a soft setter touch, overhead serve-receive passing requires firm wrists and strong finger pads to prevent double contacts.
  • Contact the ball slightly in front of the forehead with elbows bent and push forward and upward through the ball.
  • Make an early decision between forearm platform and overhead hands at chest/shoulder height to avoid getting caught in the middle.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Firm wrists, strong fingers""Hands up early above forehead""Push through to target"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Crucial instruction for teaching passers how to take high, deep float serves with their hands cleanly and legally.
