Session Overview

Two-time Olympian and World Champion Sarah Pavan explains how to manipulate platform and torso angles to handle neutral, deep, and short serves in serve receive, emphasizing moving with the hands apart and forming the platform just before contact.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Keep your hands apart while moving your feet to the ball, bringing your thumbs and wrists together just before contact.
  • On deep serves above the waist, open your hips and raise your platform parallel to the floor rather than swinging upward.
  • On short serves, lunge low to get your hips beneath the ball and present an open, slightly higher platform angle to lift the pass to the net.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Move your feet first, hands come together late""Open up and flatten the platform on deep serves""Get low and open the angle on short serves"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Breaks down the exact biomechanical adjustments required for three different serve trajectories: waist-high neutral, chest-high deep, and low short serves.
