Emily Hiza • The Art of Coaching Volleyball
Oregon State Assistant Coach & AVCA Thirty Under 30 Honoree
Session Overview
Oregon State Assistant Coach Emily Hiza demonstrates a foundational setter footwork drill designed to groove the left-right plant rhythm and hip alignment to the left antenna. Setters work through controlled movement patterns to establish balance before introducing live passes.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Finish every approach to the ball with a disciplined left-right footwork plant so the right foot leads slightly forward.
- Square the hips and shoulders toward Zone 4 at the end of the footwork sequence to create a consistent setting base.
- Beat the ball to the spot and bring hands up into the setting window before the final right-foot step lands.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Left-right plant""Square hips to Zone 4""Hands up as you arrive"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
A quick, structured footwork progression that coaches can run at the start of practice for setters of any age group.
