L
Lloy Ball • Junior Volleyball Association
4x Olympian, 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Setter & Team Pineapple Director
Session Overview
Four-time Olympian and 2008 Gold Medalist setter Lloy Ball shares his go-to basic setting footwork drills for developing quickness, balance, and muscle memory. He demonstrates solo and partner movement patterns that setters can perform for five minutes before or after every practice.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Train short, explosive first steps from the target zone so setters can track down imperfect passes without lunging.
- Always get stopped and balanced on two feet under the ball before initiating the overhead setting motion.
- Incorporate 5–10 minutes of dedicated footwork-and-catch or footwork-and-set reps before every team practice to build elite habits.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Explosive first step""Beat the ball and stop""Balanced base under the ball"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Direct footwork instruction from one of the greatest setters in U.S. Olympic history, tailored for daily junior setter development.
