Session Overview
Coach Donny Hui explains the concept of 'squaring up' to the left-side target (Zone 4) and demonstrates the exact footwork steps setters need to align their hips and shoulders with the net. He shows how turning toward the target mid-move prevents sets from drifting tight into the net.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Run to the pass spot first, then pivot on the left-right plant to square your hips and shoulders toward the left antenna.
- Squaring up to Zone 4 creates a single reference line for both outside sets and back sets to Zone 2.
- Avoid setting while still facing the passer in the back court, which causes the ball to drift into the net or out of bounds.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Run to the spot, then square""Chest and hips to Zone 4""Right foot slightly forward"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
A crystal-clear explanation of why and how setters must square their shoulders to Position 4 before releasing the ball.
