Session Overview
Coach Donny Hui shares three targeted exercises and mechanical cues to increase arm-swing velocity for harder spikes. He explains how hip-to-shoulder torque, a relaxed whipping arm, and aggressive non-hitting arm pull work together to maximize hand speed at contact.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Initiate the swing with hip and torso rotation before the hitting arm comes forward to create a whip-like kinetic chain.
- Pull the non-hitting guide arm down toward the torso as you swing to accelerate upper-body rotational speed.
- Keep the hitting shoulder and wrist loose through contact rather than tensing up the arm muscles.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Hips and core fire first""Pull the guide arm down""Loose whip through the ball"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Provides practical drills that immediately help hitters stop muscling the ball with a stiff shoulder and start generating whip speed.
