Session Overview

Coach Donny Hui teaches middle hitters how to become a constant offensive threat both with and without the ball. The tutorial covers how to read the opposing middle blocker in peripheral vision to hit around the block to Zone 1 or Zone 5, and how to run convincing decoy approaches that freeze blockers and open 1-on-1 swings for pin hitters.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Approach aggressively and jump on every pass—even as a decoy—to hold the opposing middle blocker and create 1-on-1 situations for your pin hitters.
  • Use peripheral vision while tracking the quick set to see whether the opposing middle blocker is late or drifting, then turn your wrist to hit the open seam.
  • Vary your attack routes between 1-balls right on the setter, 31 gap sets, and behind-the-setter slides to force the defense to cover the full width of the net.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Sell every decoy jump""Hit away from the block""Beat the ball to the setter"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Shows middle hitters why their approach speed and vision dictate the entire team's offensive efficiency.
