Session Overview
In Part 2 of his Spiking Footwork series, Coach Donny focuses on outside hitter approach angles, adjusting to sets that are tight, off the net, or inside, and preventing broad-jumping into the net.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Start outside the sideline on the left pin and approach at a 45-degree angle to open up both line and cross-court shots.
- Wait on your first step to read the trajectory of the set before committing your explosive penultimate stride.
- Plant your final step ahead of your hips to jump straight up and avoid broad-jumping into the net.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Start outside the court""Read the set on step one""Jump up, not forward"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Teaches hitters how to adapt their footwork to imperfect sets rather than only hitting ideal balls in warmups.
