Blocking drill: Tempo, eye progression, footwork

Jed Stotsenberg • The Art of Coaching Volleyball
Boys' Volleyball Director at WAVE Volleyball Club
Session Overview
WAVE Volleyball director Jed Stotsenberg runs a high-rep 3-on-3 blocking eye-work and footwork drill. As a setting triangle moves the ball continuously on one side, trios of blockers practice reading set direction, communicating loudly, and closing two-person blocks.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Use a continuous setting triangle on the offensive side to generate rapid, game-like reading reps for blockers without exhausting hitters.
- Progress the drill from predictable left-side sets to random left, right, and pipe sets to force true eye-work.
- Require blockers to call the set direction ('Outside!', 'Back!') out loud as soon as the ball leaves the setter's hands.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Eyes on pass, then setter""Call the set out loud""Off-blocker peel fast"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
An outstanding, low-impact practice drill that gives blockers dozens of live reading and footwork reps while training setting accuracy on the other side.
