Session Overview

Coach Donny Hui explains how front-row blockers and back-row defenders coordinate to stop quick middle attacks including front ones, back ones (slides), and shoot/three sets. He details commit-blocking versus read-blocking strategies and shows where wing defenders and Zone 6 should position around the middle block.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Against a dominant quick middle, use a commit block or have pin blockers pinch inside to help touch the 1-ball before releasing to the pins.
  • Middle blockers should take away the hitter's strongest cross-court angle on quick sets so back-row wing defenders can dig the remaining seam.
  • Back-row wing defenders (Positions 1 and 5) must stay loaded near the 10-foot line in base defense to react to sharp-angle middle spikes.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Pinch inside on the pass""Jump with the quick hitter""Dig the seam around the block"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Bridges individual blocking and team floor defense by showing exactly who covers each seam against fast-tempo middle attacks.
