Session Overview
Part 1 of Coach Donny's Middle Blocker series breaks down the three primary blocking footwork patterns along the net: the 2-step shuffle for short distances, the 3-step crossover, and the explosive 4-step swing-block footwork.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Use shuffle footwork when adjusting 1 to 2 steps laterally so your hips and shoulders stay square to the net.
- Use a 3-step or 4-step crossover pattern to sprint to the pins when the setter pushes a fast ball outside.
- Always square your hips back to the net on your final plant step so you jump straight up and penetrate over the tape.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Shuffle short, crossover long""Open, cross, and plant square""Hands high in ready posture"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Clearly compares shuffle versus crossover blocking footwork and explains exactly when middle blockers should use each pattern.
