Session Overview

In Part 2 of his Middle Blocker tutorial, Coach Donny focuses on upper-body blocking mechanics: hand spacing, spreading the fingers wide, shrugging the shoulders to lock out the arms, and penetrating early across the plane of the net.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Penetrate your hands and forearms across the net tape at a 45-degree angle rather than jumping and reaching straight up.
  • Spread fingers wide and keep thumbs roughly a ball's width apart so the volleyball cannot split your hands.
  • Angle your outside hand inward toward the middle of the opponent's court to prevent ricochets from flying out of bounds.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Press low and over the tape""Big stiff hands, thumbs close""Turn outside hand in"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Teaches blockers how to turn passive 'high-reaching' hands into an aggressive, net-penetrating wall that stuffs balls straight down.
