Session Overview
In Part 2 of his outside hitter blocking series, Coach Donny Hui covers how left-front blockers handle a front-row setter dump, align their body relative to the right-side attacker's approach, and penetrate cleanly over the net. He also explains when to reach straight up on tight balls versus pressing over on off-net sets.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Identify whether the opposing setter is front row or back row before the serve so you are ready to defend a second-ball dump on tight passes.
- Adjust your net penetration angle based on set distance: press deeper across the tape when the set is off the net, and reach higher when the ball is tight.
- Pull your hands straight back down upon landing to avoid brushing the top tape on the way down.
