Session Overview

Coach Donny Hui introduces Base Defense (also called Home Defense), the starting defensive alignment every player returns to as the opponent receives the ball. He explains how starting in base position allows a team to defend immediate threats like overpasses, setter dumps, and quick middle attacks before shifting to perimeter defense.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Every rally phase begins in Base Defense with three front-row blockers at the net, wing defenders near the 10-foot line, and Position 6 deep.
  • Base positioning protects the court against sudden first- and second-ball attacks such as overpasses, setter dumps, and quick middle spikes.
  • Hold your base position until you read the setter's hands and confirm the ball is being set to an outside or opposite hitter.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Start in base every play""Read the setter before releasing""Protect against the dump and quick"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Essential foundational video for teaching youth and club teams why defenders don't stand in wing defense before the opponent sets the ball.
