Session Overview
Former USA Olympic head coach Terry Liskevych walks through the classic Dig-Set-Hit drill, a foundational ball-control progression that links floor defense directly to setting and attacking. Players work in small groups across the court to dig an attacked ball cleanly to target, set with precision, and swing back at the next defender in line.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Train defenders to dig high and off the net so the setter can square up and deliver an accurate transition set
- Have hitters swing with controlled pace directly at the opposing defender to keep the continuous drill rhythm alive
- Require players to rotate immediately from digging to setting to hitting so every athlete masters all three transition touches
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Dig it high with air under the ball""Square your feet before you set""Swing with control at the defender"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
One of the most popular and effective continuous ball-control drills in volleyball for connecting defensive digs to transition offense.
