How to ROLL (rolling dive) - Volleyball Defense Tutorial

C
Coach Donny Hui • Elevate Yourself
Elevate Yourself Founder & Head Coach

Session Overview

Coach Donny Hui teaches the Japanese-developed rolling dive (barrel roll / shoulder roll) technique used to dig balls laterally outside a defender's reach and immediately pop back up to the feet. He breaks down the low lateral lunge, playing the ball underneath its center, tucking the chin, and rolling diagonally across the back of the shoulder.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Step low and laterally toward the ball so your hips are already near the floor before making contact.
  • After playing the ball up, tuck your chin to your opposite shoulder and roll diagonally across the fleshy part of your upper back—never straight over the spine or neck.
  • Use the momentum of your legs swinging over to plant your feet and stand straight back up into the rally.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Step low to the side""Tuck the chin and roll over the shoulder""Pop right back to your feet"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Step-by-step progression for teaching athletes how to execute lateral emergency digs and recover to their feet without hitting their hip or spine.
