Coach Donny Hui • Elevate Yourself
Elevate Yourself Founder & Head Coach

Session Overview

Coach Donny Hui breaks down the exact defensive responsibilities of all six players when the opponent sets their outside (left-front) hitter. Using court diagrams and live match clips, he shows how the right-side and middle blockers set the block while the off-blocker peels for tips and the three back-row defenders cover line, seam, and sharp cross-court.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • The right-back defender (Position 1) shifts to the sideline outside the block's shadow to dig line drives and high-hands wipes.
  • The left-back defender (Position 5) steps into the cross-court seam outside the middle blocker's hands, ready for the hardest-driven spikes.
  • The off-blocker (left-front) pulls off the net to the 10-foot line to cover short tips and roll shots over the block.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Get out of the block shadow""Off-blocker peel for tips""Stop and set your base on contact"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Gives coaches a complete, role-by-role blueprint for perimeter defense against the most frequently set attacker in volleyball.
