READING Hitters PART 1/2 - Volleyball Defense Tutorial

Coach Donny Hui • Elevate Yourself
Elevate Yourself Founder & Head Coach

Session Overview

Coach Donny Hui explains how defenders can anticipate where a spike will go before the ball is even hit by reading visual cues from the pass, setter, and hitter. Part 1 covers reading the set location (tight, off-net, inside, or past the antenna), reading the hitter's approach angle and shoulder alignment, and positioning around your team's block.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Follow the three-step visual progression on every play: read the pass, read the setter's body and release, then lock onto the hitter's approach and hitting shoulder.
  • Recognize how set location limits the hitter: sets pushed past the antenna usually force cross-court shots, while inside sets open up sharp cut angles.
  • Position yourself in the open seam around your team's block and come to a complete split-step stop just before the hitter contacts the ball.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Eyes: Pass, Setter, Hitter""Read the hitting shoulder""Stop before contact"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Teaches defenders how to replace pure reaction time with smart visual anticipation and pre-contact positioning.
