Volleyball Coverage Drill - Russ Rose

R
Russ Rose • The Art of Coaching Volleyball
7x NCAA National Champion Head Coach, Penn State

Session Overview

Seven-time NCAA champion Penn State head coach Russ Rose demonstrates a specialized attack-coverage drill that trains teams to dig balls deflected straight back off the opponent's block. By intentionally creating blocked-ball deflections in practice, players learn to close into coverage umbrellas low and balanced rather than watching the hitter.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Move into tight coverage positions around the attacker as the set is in the air, stopping in a low posture before the swing
  • Expect every attack to be stuffed straight back so coverage players react immediately to deflections off the block
  • Pop blocked balls vertically into the middle of the court so the team can reset and take a second offensive swing
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Close to coverage and get low before contact""Expect the block to come right back at you""Pop the deflection straight up for a reset"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Taught by legendary coach Russ Rose, this drill directly addresses one of the most neglected phases of floor defense: covering your own hitters.
