5 Ball Transition Wave Drill
D
Diane Flick-Williams • The Art of Coaching Volleyball
Head Coach, Western Washington University
Session Overview
Western Washington Head Coach Diane Flick-Williams walks through the '5 Ball Transition Wave Drill,' training front-row waves to block, transition off the net, and attack five rapid-fire tempos in succession.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Hitters must complete a full block jump before opening their hips and sprinting outside the court to get full approach depth on every ball.
- Running a 5-ball sequence forces attackers to maintain high contact point and clean footwork even when fatigued on balls 4 and 5.
- Setters and defensive feeders must enter the next ball the instant the previous attack crosses the net to maintain game-like tempo.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Block, open up, and get all the way off the net""Keep your approach explosive on ball five""Eyes on the setter as you transition"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Builds lung-burning transition endurance and footwork discipline for middle, outside, and opposite hitters.
