Session Overview

The Alabama Drill is a fast-moving multi-ball team drill from The Art of Coaching Volleyball that challenges six players to execute consecutive defensive digs, transition sets, and attacks without a break. As soon as one rally sequence finishes, the coach immediately enters the next ball to test court coverage, transition footwork, and vocal communication.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Feed consecutive balls immediately after each attack so front-row hitters must transition off the net withoutadmiring their swing
  • Mix free balls, down balls, and hard-driven attacks to test how quickly the defense shifts between base and read positions
  • Hold the group on the court until they complete a required number of error-free three-contact conversions
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Land and transition off the net immediately""Next ball is already coming—reset base""Three clean contacts on every ball"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

A staple multi-ball transition drill that builds conditioning, fast net-to-offense transition footwork, and relentless ball control.
