Art of Coaching Volleyball Pass for Points Drill - Diane Flick

D
Diane Flick-Williams • The Art of Coaching Volleyball
Head Coach, Western Washington University

Session Overview

Diane Flick-Williams demonstrates 'Pass for Points,' a competitive 6v6 serve-receive drill where the quality of the initial pass (graded on a 1, 2, or 3 scale) dictates how many points the receiving team earns if they win the rally.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Grade every serve-receive pass live from 1 to 3: a 3-pass (in-system, all three hitters available) is worth 3 points if the receiving team wins the rally.
  • A 2-pass (two hitting options) earns 2 points on a rally win, while a 1-pass (out-of-system) earns 1 point.
  • Because points are only awarded if the receiving team also wins the rally, setters and hitters feel extra urgency to convert every 3-pass.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Pass a 3 to play for 3 points""Cash in on every in-system pass""Hold your platform angle to the target"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Directly connects serve-receive passing grades to rally scoring so passers value a 3-point pass and hitters fight to terminate every in-system set.
