JVA Coach to Coach Video of the Week: Setter Defense and Transition Drills
M
Melissa Starck-Bean • Junior Volleyball Association
Coach & Director, KIVA Volleyball (Louisville, KY)
Session Overview
Melissa Starck-Bean of KIVA Volleyball demonstrates a progression of drills that train setter defense in both Zone 1 (back row) and Zone 2 (front row), as well as rapid setter release and transition setting off a dig.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Setters must play defense first when an opponent is in system—staying stopped in Zone 1 to dig hard cross-court or line tips before releasing.
- Train setters to pop up their own dig, recover off the floor, and immediately track the second ball set by the libero.
- When the setter does not dig the first ball, practice explosive transition footwork from their defensive base to the net target.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Setter plays defense first—don't release early""Dig the ball, then get up and call the out-of-system set""Square your hips to target after transitioning from Zone 1"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Bridges the gap between individual setter footwork drills and live defensive digging responsibilities in Zone 1.
