Out of system drill Digging, setting, hitting

T
Tod Mattox • The Art of Coaching Volleyball
Head Coach, The Bishop's School

Session Overview

Tod Mattox demonstrates a three-touch out-of-system drill that trains defenders, non-setters, and pin hitters to execute cleanly when the first ball is dug off the net. Players rotate through digging a coach-driven ball, delivering a high bump or hand set from mid-court, and taking an aggressive swing against a live defense.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Dig the first contact up into the middle of the court rather than tight to the net so the second-contact setter has room to operate
  • Train non-setters to square their shoulders to the left or right antenna and deliver a high set four feet off the net and four feet inside the sideline
  • Require hitters to adjust their approach timing for higher, slower out-of-system sets and swing aggressively into the deep court
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Dig the first ball to the middle of the court""Four feet off, four feet in on high sets""Wait on the high ball and swing big"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Trains every player on the roster to comfortably dig, set a playable high ball, and terminate out-of-system rallies.
