The Art of Coaching Volleyball

Session Overview

On-court breakdown of a high-repetition out-of-system drill that trains non-setters to deliver high, hittable second balls to the pins and teaches outside and opposite hitters to time high-ball approaches against a set block.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Train every player on the court to set a high, clean ball to the left or right pin from anywhere behind the 10-foot line.
  • Leave at least 3 to 4 feet of space off the net and inside the antenna on out-of-system sets so the hitter has room to swing past the block.
  • Hitters must wait patiently behind the 10-foot line and let the high ball peak before starting their explosive 3-step approach.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"High and four feet off the net""Wait on the high ball—don't overrun it""Aggressive swing or smart recycle"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Directly addresses one of the biggest weaknesses in club and high school volleyball: converting broken plays into aggressive swings.
