Session Overview
The Art of Coaching Volleyball demonstrates the Scrap Drill, a high-energy defensive and ball-control drill designed to train relentless pursuit and communication on unpredictable balls. Players start in defensive base positions and must chase down tough coach-driven tips, deflections, and scramble balls to convert a playable third contact over the net.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Use unpredictable coach tosses into seams and short zones to force defenders to communicate early and pursue relentlessly
- Require three controlled contacts on every scramble sequence so players learn to better the ball rather than just sending it over
- Track consecutive successful conversions to build competitive urgency and defensive pride across the unit
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Nothing hits the floor without a pursuit""Call the seam early and loud""Better the second ball high to the court"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Builds defensive grit, vocal communication, and out-of-system scramble instincts when rallies break down.
