Session Overview

The 'Passing Ladder Drill' challenges pairs or small groups of players to pass accurately over the net from progressively deeper court distances, stepping back toward the endline with each successful target pass.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Start close to the 10-foot line and take one giant step backward toward the baseline after every accurate pass caught by the target.
  • Notice how short-distance passes require a quiet, absorbing platform while deep-court passes require slightly more leg transfer.
  • Turn the progression into a race between multiple lanes across the net to add competitive urgency to warm-up ball control.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Hit the target to step back""Adjust your platform angle for depth""Stop your feet before contact"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

With over 330,000 views, this simple, self-directed drill teaches passers how to adjust platform lift and leg drive as distance to the target increases.
