Session Overview
A focused setter-middle connection drill from The Art of Coaching Volleyball where the middle attacker hits two consecutive balls—first a high coach toss and immediately a quick tempo set from the setter—to train visual ball tracking and transition footwork.
Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles
- Start the middle hitter 10 feet off the net and require them to track a high coach toss before immediately transitioning into a live setter quick.
- Train the middle attacker to find the pass and the setter’s hands early with their eyes so they can adjust their approach angle in flight.
- Keep the setter’s arm high and open to the middle hitter throughout the approach to create a consistent hitting window.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Eyes on the setter’s hands early""Transition fast off the first swing""Present your hitting hand high"
Why Recommended for Coaches:
Directly fixes timing disconnects between setters and middle hitters by forcing the middle to locate the ball early with their eyes before accelerating into the quick attack.
