4 2 volleyball system: A simple offense that works

T
Tod Mattox • The Art of Coaching Volleyball
Head Coach, The Bishop's School

Session Overview

Coach Tod Mattox explains why the classic 4-2 offensive system (four hitters and two setters, with the front-row setter running the offense) remains a highly effective system for developing teams and creative lineups. Using live court demonstrations, he shows how incorporating the Slide, the fast left-side Go set, and back-row attacks makes the 4-2 surprisingly dangerous.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Keep a setter in the front row across all six rotations to eliminate long back-row setter runs and simplify defensive transitions
  • Feature the Slide attack behind the front-row setter and fast Go sets to the outside to stretch the opposing middle blocker
  • Pass slightly more toward the center of the court so the front-row setter has space to set the Slide and dump on the second contact
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Front-row setter stays home at the net""Pass middle-court to open the Slide""Keep the back-row pipe and setter dump active"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

Shows youth and high school coaches how to modernize the 4-2 system with Slide and back-row attacks while keeping serve-receive rotations simple.
