5-1 Rotation in Volleyball: Explained With Animations

Session Overview

Using clean court-view animations, Set Explainer walks through all six rotations of a 5-1 volleyball offense in both serve receive and defensive base transitions. The video clearly illustrates positional overlap boundaries, setter release paths from the back row, and how hitters switch to their preferred pins after the serve.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Understand how each player must remain inside the legal overlap boundaries with their direct front/back and left/right neighbors until the server contacts the ball.
  • In Rotations 1, 6, and 5 (setter in the back row), the setter pushes up toward Zone 2/3 to give the team three front-row attackers.
  • Once the ball crosses the net, players immediately switch to their defensive base positions (Middle in 3/6, Outside in 4/5, Opposite/Setter in 2/1).
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Check your front and side neighbors""Setter push up, release on contact""Switch to base after the attack"

Why Recommended for Coaches:
