Serve Receive Rotations for a 5-1 Offense Volleyball Tutorial

Coach Donny Hui • Elevate Yourself
Elevate Yourself Founder & Head Coach

Session Overview

Coach Donny Hui walks through all six serve-receive rotations for a 5-1 offense on the court and whiteboard, explaining both the official FIVB/USAV overlap rules and the tactical options for each rotation (including whether to hit the outside on the right side in Rotation 1 or wrap all the way to the left).

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Keep your three best passers (two outside hitters and the libero) in the serve-receive pattern across all six rotations while hiding the setter, middle, and opposite.
  • In Rotation 1 (Setter in Zone 1), decide as a team whether the front-row outside hitter attacks a quick right-side ball on the first contact or wraps behind to hit left side.
  • In Rotation 4 (Setter in Zone 4), stack the front-row middle and outside tight on the left sideline so the setter has an unobstructed sprint to the target zone.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Three passers own the court""Stack tight on the left in Ro 4""Leave early on server contact"
