Session Overview

This partner passing drill demonstrates how to execute a clean lateral drop-step to handle deep serves without getting jammed. Athletes alternate tossing and opening their hips to pass deep balls back to target with balanced footwork.

Core Biomechanical & Tactical Principles

  • Open the hips early with a decisive drop-step instead of backpedaling flat-footed against deep serves.
  • Take the ball outside the midline on deep floaters by angling the inside shoulder and platform toward the target.
  • Perform the drill in pairs with continuous alternating reps to build automatic footwork on both the left and right sides.
Verbal Coaching Cues for Practice:
"Open hips and drop-step""Take deep balls outside the body""Angle platform to target"

Why Recommended for Coaches:

A simple, high-repetition partner progression that teaches passers of all levels to open their hips and move laterally into deep serve trajectories.
